Malaysia Tourist eVisa vs Business eVisa: What's the Difference?

The Tourist eVisa and the Business eVisa are applied for in the same way and share the same identity documents. What separates them is the purpose of your trip, and with it the paperwork that supports your application. This guide explains how to tell them apart and how preparation differs.

The Short Answer

Choose by purpose. The Tourist eVisa is for holidays, sightseeing and personal visits to family or friends in Malaysia. The Business eVisa is for meetings, business discussions, events and other eligible business activities with an organization in Malaysia. Neither covers taking up employment or studying; those journeys use the Visa with Reference (VDR) entry-visa categories.

Tourist eVisa

Purpose
Holiday, sightseeing, visiting family or friends.
Main supporting papers
Travel and accommodation: a hotel confirmation or host documents, or a transit letter when no hotel is planned.
Preparation focus
Your accommodation route and consistent dates.

Business eVisa

Purpose
Meetings, business discussions, events and other eligible business activities.
Main supporting papers
The visit itself: an invitation or company letter, purpose-of-visit information and company details.
Preparation focus
Collecting the correspondence first and aligning its dates.

How to Tell Which One Fits Your Trip

Ask yourself:

  • Is the trip for leisure, sightseeing or seeing people you know in Malaysia? That points to the Tourist eVisa.
  • Will you meet a company, hold business discussions or attend a business event? That points to the Business eVisa.
  • Will you take up a job, study, join a pass holder or make an approved official visit? Neither eVisa applies; see the VDR categories.

Pick the category that matches the purpose you will actually declare, and prepare documents for that category. An application for the wrong one, or one supported by the wrong kind of papers, will usually lead to a request for additional documents. The homepage nationality list is also worth a look before you start, because eligibility depends on passport nationality as well as purpose.

What the Two Categories Share

  • Both are applied for online before travel, asking for personal, passport and travel details and the supporting documents that apply.
  • Both start with the same three items: a valid passport, a colour copy of its biodata page and a recent passport-style photograph.
  • Both offer a Single Entry option and, where eligible and approved, a Multiple Entry option; Multiple Entry depends on nationality-specific eligibility and immigration conditions.
  • Both are available at a Regular or an Express service level. Express means priority handling of our assistance, not a faster immigration decision.
  • Both are priced on the Visa Fees page, by entry option and service level, so you can compare them there directly.
  • Both remain subject to Immigration approval, and payment does not guarantee visa issuance.
  • Neither includes the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card, which is a separate arrival-information requirement.

How the Supporting Documents Differ

Tourist eVisa: travel and accommodation evidence

A tourist application is supported by papers that show where you will be. A confirmed flight booking or e-ticket and a hotel reservation make it clearer; a stay with family or friends is supported by the host's documents; and a stop with no hotel is explained by a short signed letter. These are recommendations that help verification rather than requirements for every application. The Tourist eVisa requirements page sets out each situation.

Business eVisa: correspondence about the visit

A business application is supported by papers that show why you are going. An invitation or supporting letter from the organization you will visit may be requested, ideally stating the purpose of the visit, the inviting company's details and the intended activities. Purpose-of-visit information, company registration or organizational details where applicable, and an employment confirmation letter or business identification showing your role complete the picture. If the inviting organization arranges your accommodation, its booking confirmation can serve as your accommodation evidence. See the Business eVisa requirements page for the full list.

Where the two overlap

Both categories may ask for financial evidence where required, a residence permit or pass if you apply from a country other than your own, and travel documents. An Employment Verification Letter may also be requested in either case, depending on your circumstances. The Document Requirements page lists the shared items, and our guide to preparing your documents covers scanning and matching details. Applicants who live outside their country of nationality can read the guide to applying from abroad.

Preparation Considerations for Each Category

If you are applying as a tourist

Decide early how you will stay, because each route uses different documents: a hotel reservation, a host's package, or a transit letter. Then make sure the dates in the application, the flight booking and the accommodation confirmation are identical.

If you are applying for business

Collect the correspondence before you open the form, since business applications tend to go more smoothly when it is in hand. Ask the inviting organization to include the purpose of the visit, its company details and the planned activities, and check that invitation, flight and hotel dates agree. The company named in your employment letter, the invitation and the application should be the same.

Spell out the meetings, discussions or events in concrete terms. A clearly stated purpose supports the business category, while a vague one tends to invite questions.

Common Mix-Ups

Using the Tourist eVisa for a business trip
Business-related trips such as meetings and events belong to the Business eVisa, which brings its own set of business documents.
Using the Business eVisa to work in Malaysia
It covers business-related visits. Approved employment arrangements use the Employment Pass VDR entry visa, which needs the VDR letter and the Immigration approval letter rather than a business invitation.
Preparing tourist papers for a business application
Tourist-style documents on their own will usually lead to a request for additional documents.
Assuming the invitation covers everything
An employment confirmation letter or business identification may still be requested. Have it ready.
Treating Multiple Entry as a free choice
It depends on eligibility and approval, so a Single Entry application may be the only option for some applicants.

Choosing and Moving Forward

  1. Decide the category from the purpose of your trip.
  2. Open its requirements page and note which supporting documents apply to your situation.
  3. Gather and check your documents; the guide to preparing your documents covers scans and matching details.
  4. Choose an entry option and a service level on the Visa Fees page.
  5. Submit the application once every field agrees with your documents.

This comparison helps you prepare and is not legal or immigration advice. Document requests can vary between applicants, and every application is assessed by Immigration.
