Malaysia Tourist eVisa Requirements
If you are planning a holiday or leisure visit, organize your identification and travel information before beginning your application. This guide explains what to prepare, which items are confirmed requirements and which are preparation advice.
Malaysia Tourist eVisa Overview
The Malaysia Tourist eVisa is the category for travelers visiting Malaysia for tourism and leisure. It is applied for online before travel, and our online application service covers it alongside the Business eVisa. The application asks for personal, passport and travel details and for the supporting documents that apply to your trip.
Two entry options exist. A Single Entry visa is intended for one entry into Malaysia; a Multiple Entry visa may permit more than one entry during its validity period where that option is available and approved. Multiple Entry eligibility varies by nationality. Our service is offered at a Regular level and an Express level, where Express means priority handling of our assistance and not a faster immigration decision.
Every application remains subject to Immigration review. Preparing a complete application makes the process smoother, but it does not guarantee approval or a particular processing time.
Who the Tourist eVisa Is Intended For
Choose this category if the purpose of your visit is a holiday, sightseeing, or a personal visit to family or friends living in Malaysia. Staying in a hotel or with a host are both covered; the accommodation documents simply differ, as explained below.
It is not the right category for business activities, employment or study. Meetings, events and other business-related visits fall under the Business eVisa, while applicants with approved employment, study, dependent or official-visit arrangements use the Visa with Reference (VDR) entry-visa categories listed in the visa category directory.
Eligibility and Nationality Considerations
Visa application options and requirements vary with your passport nationality and your purpose of travel. The homepage lists the nationalities for which eVisa information is published; review it before you begin, and if your nationality is not listed, check the entry documentation that applies to you before relying on this category.
Nationality also affects the entry option. Multiple Entry visas are subject to nationality-specific eligibility and applicable immigration conditions, so a Single Entry application may be the only option available to some applicants.
If you live in a country other than the one that issued your passport and will apply from there, prepare the standard tourist documents plus evidence of your valid residence permit, pass or long-term stay authorization in that country, and travel evidence showing your intended return there after Malaysia. The Document Requirements page gives a worked example.
Passport Requirements
These are confirmed requirements for every application.
What to prepare
- A valid passport: the one you will actually travel with.
- A clear colour copy of the biodata page showing your photograph, full name, passport number, date of birth, nationality and other personal details.
- The entire page in the image, including all edges and the machine-readable section at the bottom.
- No glare, shadows, cropped information or blurred text.
The passport details you enter in the application must match the information printed in the passport. If you hold more than one passport, use the one you will present on arrival.
Photograph Requirements
Your passport-style photograph
- Recent, showing your face clearly against a plain background.
- A natural appearance: no beauty filters or heavy editing.
- No distracting shadows and no blur.
The photograph is uploaded with the application. This site does not publish pixel or print dimensions; follow the instructions shown in the application form when you upload.
Personal Information and Application Details
The online application asks for your personal details, your passport details and your travel details. Enter each exactly as it appears on your passport and bookings: the spelling of your name, your passport number, your date of birth and your nationality are the fields most often typed incorrectly, and a mismatch between the form and the passport copy is the most common reason for a clarification request.
Before you submit, read every field once more against the documents in front of you. The application is reviewed on the information you supply, so a consistent, complete entry is the best preparation you can make.
Travel Itinerary and Accommodation Information
Keep your intended arrival and departure information ready. The items below are recommendations that make the application clearer; they are not mandatory for every application.
Flight booking or travel itinerary
- A confirmed flight booking or issued e-ticket showing your full name, travel dates, flight itinerary and booking reference.
- Where available, the issued e-ticket number as additional evidence of confirmed travel.
Clear, verifiable flight documentation may help reduce additional verification requests and avoidable processing delays.
Hotel or accommodation confirmation
- A confirmed hotel reservation showing the guest's name, the accommodation address and the intended dates of stay.
- Where available, payment confirmation for the reservation, including bookings made through Booking.com or similar platforms.
A reservation that can be verified directly with the hotel or booking provider is preferable. If payment has not yet been collected, the confirmation should reflect the reservation and its payment status accurately.
Staying with family or friends
- Malaysian citizen host: copy of the host's MyKad, a recent utility bill showing the host's address, and a signed invitation or sponsorship letter.
- Foreign national living in Malaysia: copy of the host's passport biodata page and valid Malaysian long-term residence authorization, a recent utility bill, and a signed invitation or sponsorship letter.
- The host's letter should state the visitor's name and passport number, the host's name and address, the relationship, the intended dates, confirmation that the visitor will stay at the residence, and the host's signature and date.
Transit without a hotel
- A short explanation letter giving your name, passport number, arrival and onward flight numbers and dates, onward destination, and a note that no hotel stay is planned, signed and dated.
- Where available, the confirmed onward flight booking.
Supporting Documents and Preparation Checklist
The Tourist eVisa checklist on the Document Requirements page, in one place.
Core documents
- Valid passport.
- Clear passport biodata page.
- Recent passport-style photograph.
Supporting documents, where required
- Bank statement or acceptable financial evidence.
- Flight booking or travel itinerary.
- Hotel or accommodation confirmation.
- Current residence permit, where applicable.
- Additional supporting documents requested for the application.
Some applications may require a recent bank statement or other acceptable evidence of financial support. Where it applies, the document should be readable, complete and consistent with the application.
How to Prepare an Online Tourist eVisa Application
Confirm the category and your nationality
Check that a tourism or leisure visit is the purpose of your trip and review the eligibility-by-nationality information, including whether Multiple Entry is available to you.
Choose the entry option and service level
Decide between Single Entry and Multiple Entry, and between the Regular and Express service, using the Visa Fees page.
Gather your documents
Prepare the passport copy, the photograph and the travel, accommodation and financial documents that apply to your trip, using the checklist above.
Complete the application
Enter the requested personal, passport and travel details exactly as they appear on your documents.
Provide supporting documents
Upload the documents requested for the Tourist eVisa category.
Review and submit
Check every detail against your passport and bookings, then complete the submission.
Applications are subject to Immigration approval. Payment of the service fee does not guarantee visa issuance.
Tourist eVisa Fees
Service prices for the Tourist eVisa are published on the Visa Fees page for both entry options and both service levels, in US dollars per applicant. Review them there before you apply; they are not repeated here so that the fees page remains the single reference.

Common Application Preparation Mistakes
Each of these is easy to avoid with a second look before submitting.
- Unreadable passport scans
- Glare, shadows, blur or a cropped edge on the biodata page lead to a request for a new copy. Photograph the whole page in good light.
- Details that do not match the passport
- A name spelled differently, a transposed passport number or the wrong nationality is the most frequent inconsistency. Copy from the passport, not from memory.
- An edited photograph
- Filters, heavy retouching and shadowed or blurred portraits fall short of the passport-style standard. Use a plain background and a natural appearance.
- Travel dates that disagree
- Keep the dates in the application, the flight booking and the hotel confirmation consistent.
- No accommodation evidence for a host stay
- Visitors staying with family or friends sometimes omit the host documents. Prepare the host package for your host's status.
- Forgetting the residence document
- Applicants applying from a country other than their own should include their valid residence permit or pass and return-travel evidence.
Tourist eVisa Questions
Can I use a Tourist eVisa for a business trip?
No. Meetings, events and other business-related visits belong to the Business eVisa category, which asks for business documents a tourist application does not.
Which nationalities can apply?
Eligibility depends on your passport nationality and purpose of travel. The homepage lists the nationalities for which eVisa information is published; check it first.
Do I need a paid flight ticket?
A confirmed booking or issued e-ticket is encouraged because it makes the application clearer, but a purchased ticket is not mandatory for every application and does not guarantee a faster decision.
Do I need a hotel booking?
A confirmed hotel reservation is recommended, with payment confirmation where available. Travelers staying with family or friends provide host documents instead.
What if I am visiting family or friends?
Prepare the host package that matches your host's status: identity card or passport and residence authorization, a recent utility bill, and a signed invitation letter with the details listed above.
I live abroad. Can I apply from the country I live in?
Yes. Prepare the standard documents plus evidence of your valid residence in that country and travel evidence showing your intended return there.
Is a bank statement required?
It is listed as a supporting document, where required. Some applications may require financial evidence; prepare it if it is requested for yours.
What is the difference between Single Entry and Multiple Entry?
Single Entry is intended for one entry into Malaysia. Multiple Entry may permit more than one entry during the validity period where available and approved, subject to nationality-specific eligibility.
Does a complete application guarantee approval?
No. Complete, consistent documents reduce avoidable clarification requests, but every application remains subject to Immigration review and decision.
Do I also need the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card?
MDAC is a separate arrival-information requirement from the visa. See the MDAC Overview page for who needs it and how it works.
