What Is the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card?

The Malaysia Digital Arrival Card, usually shortened to MDAC, is a digital record of a traveler's arrival information. Instead of completing a paper card on the way into the country, travelers provide their details in advance.

Its purpose is to record who is arriving, when and how, and where they will stay. The information it records is the traveler's passport details, nationality, travel dates, point of arrival, transport details and accommodation and contact information for the trip.

MDAC records arrival information. It does not itself grant permission to enter Malaysia, and it does not replace any visa or other entry documentation that applies to the traveler.

MDAC and eVisa serve different purposes

MDAC

A record of arrival information for a specific trip: who is arriving, when, where and where they will stay.

eVisa

A travel authorization for travelers whose nationality requires a visa for an eligible purpose, such as tourism or business. It is applied for separately.

Explore eVisa categories

Because the two serve different purposes, holding an eVisa does not take the place of MDAC, and being eligible for visa-free travel does not automatically remove MDAC from your preparation list. Check the entry documentation for your nationality and purpose of travel separately, and treat MDAC as its own step.

Why MDAC Is Important

Accurate arrival information keeps your record consistent with your passport and your actual travel plans. A few careful habits make the whole process smoother.

Prepare accurate arrival information
Gather passport, transport and accommodation details before you begin, while there is still time to check them.
Match your passport exactly
Enter your name, passport number, nationality and date of birth exactly as they appear in the passport you will travel with.
Review your travel dates
Provide the arrival date you actually expect, and the departure date where requested, so the record reflects your journey.
Prepare accommodation information
Have the name and address of your hotel, or the residence where you will stay, ready before you start.
Check your contact details
Use an email address and phone number you can access while travelling, and read them back for typos.
Retain your submission information
Keep the submission or confirmation details available so you can refer to them at arrival.
Avoid preventable errors
Most problems come from small slips: a transposed digit, a misspelled surname, the wrong nationality in a drop-down. A second read-through catches them.

Who Needs MDAC?

MDAC is generally required for foreign visitors to Malaysia, whether they travel visa-free or with a visa, unless they fall under an applicable exemption. It applies to tourism, business and other travel purposes alike.

Needing a visa and needing MDAC are two different questions: a visa is your travel authorization, while MDAC records your arrival information for the trip. Check both before you travel.

MDAC for Visa-Free Travelers

Travelers from visa-free countries generally need to complete MDAC before arriving in Malaysia, unless they fall under an applicable exemption. Visa-free entry means you do not need a visa; it does not remove MDAC.

Prepare the same passport, travel and accommodation details as any other traveler. You can apply through our website in advance of your trip.

MDAC for Visa-Required Travelers

An eVisa does not replace MDAC. The eVisa is your travel authorization; MDAC is your arrival information, and visa holders generally need both unless exempt.

Plan for both: obtain the applicable visa through the eVisa process, and apply for your MDAC through our website before you travel.

Information Needed for Your MDAC Application

MDAC is completed with information, not uploaded documents. Have the following details to hand before you start; fields can vary with the traveler and the form, so not every item is requested in every case.

Passport and Personal Information

Identity details exactly as shown in your passport
  • Full name as shown in the passport.
  • Passport number.
  • Nationality.
  • Date of birth.
  • Passport expiry details.
  • Other personal fields where applicable, such as sex or place of birth.

Use the passport you will actually travel with. If you hold more than one passport, the details must come from the one you present on arrival.

Travel Information

Dates, departure point, transport and arrival point
  • Intended arrival date.
  • Intended departure date, where requested.
  • Country or place of departure.
  • Flight or other transport details, where applicable.
  • Arrival point or port of entry.
  • Relevant onward-travel information, where requested.

If you are still choosing flights, settle the itinerary first so that the dates and arrival point you enter are the ones you will use.

Accommodation and Contact Information

Where you will stay and how you can be reached
  • Accommodation type, such as hotel or private residence.
  • Hotel or residential address in Malaysia.
  • Email address.
  • Contact information, including a phone number.
  • Relevant stay details, such as the length of stay.

Travelers staying with family or friends should have the host's residential address ready in the same way as a hotel address.

Additional Information

Fields that depend on the traveler and the form
  • Other fields may depend on the traveler and the application form in use.
  • Examples can include a travel-purpose selection, previous-visit information or details that relate to a particular mode of arrival.
  • Not every field described on this page is requested in every case; enter what the form asks for your situation.

When to Apply for MDAC

You can apply for your Malaysia Digital Arrival Card through our website in advance of your trip. Simply provide your passport, travel and accommodation information, and our team will handle your application according to your travel dates.

Your application request can be made early. The actual MDAC submission is completed within the applicable three-day arrival window.

How to Apply for MDAC

You can apply through our website in advance of your trip. The process has six steps.

  1. Review eligibility and travel requirements

Confirm that MDAC applies to you (most foreign visitors need it unless exempt) and check separately whether you need a visa.

  2. Prepare passport and travel details

Collect the information listed above for every traveler who will be included.

  3. Complete personal and arrival information

Enter passport data, travel dates, arrival point, transport and accommodation information in the form.

  4. Review the entered information

Compare every field with the passport and the booking documents before continuing. This is the moment to fix a typo.

  5. Complete the applicable service payment

Pay the service fee for each traveler included in the application.

  6. Retain the available submission or confirmation information

Keep the details you receive so they are available on arrival and for reference later.

Submitting arrival information does not mean instant approval, guaranteed delivery or guaranteed entry; entry remains subject to the checks carried out on arrival.

Arriving by Air, Land or Sea

Arrival information is prepared for every mode of arrival, but the details worth having ready differ slightly. Requirements and any exemptions can also vary with the traveler, so treat these as preparation pointers rather than a single rule for everyone.

Air Arrivals

Have your passport, flight number, airline, departure airport and arrival airport ready, together with the arrival date shown on your ticket. If you connect through another airport, use the flight that lands in Malaysia.

Land Arrivals

Prepare the border-crossing point you plan to use, the date of crossing and the transport you will use to reach it, such as a bus, train or private vehicle. Arrival information applies to land arrivals as well as air arrivals.

Sea Arrivals

Have the ferry, cruise or vessel details ready, including the operator, the port of arrival and the arrival date. Cruise passengers should prepare the details of the port where they will first arrive in Malaysia.

Family and Group Applications

Families and travel parties can be handled together through our group-application option, which keeps one trip's arrival information in one place and avoids repeating the payment process for every traveler.

  • Up to 10 travelers can be included in one group application.
  • Each traveler has their own personal and passport details.
  • Shared trip details may be entered together when they are identical for everyone.
  • One combined payment covers the whole group.
  • All traveler details should be reviewed before submission, not only the lead traveler's.

Where travelers in a party have different accommodation or travel details, enter each traveler's own details rather than copying one set across the group.

After MDAC Submission

Once your arrival information has been submitted, a little housekeeping keeps everything ready for the journey.

Review the submitted details
Read through the details once more against your passport and bookings while they are fresh.
Keep the confirmation information
Store whatever submission or confirmation information you receive where you can reach it when travelling, for example with your travel documents.
Check passport information for errors
Look specifically at the passport number, name spelling, date of birth and passport expiry date. If you spot a mistake, email our support team to request a correction.
Arrival-date or accommodation changes
Email our support team at least 72 hours before arrival to change your arrival date, hotel address or other travel details, provided your MDAC has not yet been completed. Once it is ready, these details cannot be changed and a new application is needed.
Repeat visits and current journey information
Arrival information is prepared for a specific trip. For a later visit, prepare the details of that journey afresh rather than relying on an earlier submission.
Prepare the necessary travel documents
Carry the passport you used, any visa or entry documentation that applies to you, and your bookings, alongside the MDAC confirmation details.

Common MDAC Mistakes to Avoid

These are the errors we see most often, with the simple check that prevents each one.

Misspelled names
Copy the name letter by letter from the passport's machine-readable zone rather than typing from memory.
Incorrect passport numbers
Read the number from the passport itself, not from an old booking, and watch for easily confused characters such as 0 and O.
Wrong nationality
Select the nationality of the passport you will travel with, which matters for dual nationals in particular.
Incorrect arrival dates
Use the date your flight, vessel or vehicle actually arrives in Malaysia, allowing for overnight journeys that land the next day.
Incorrect flight or transport details
Enter the final flight or transport you will use, not a provisional plan you have since changed.
Incomplete accommodation information
Have the full hotel or residential address ready before you begin, including the state and postcode where you have them.
Incorrect email or contact information
Give an email address and phone number you can access while travelling, and check them for typos.
Assuming a visa automatically replaces MDAC
Treat the eVisa and MDAC as separate steps; one does not stand in for the other.
Mistakes in group members' details
In a group application, check every traveler's passport details and dates, not only your own.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is MDAC?

The Malaysia Digital Arrival Card is a digital record of your arrival information: passport details, travel dates, point of arrival and accommodation in Malaysia. It is separate from any visa.

Is MDAC a visa?

No. A visa or eVisa is your travel authorization. MDAC only records your arrival information for a specific trip, and travelers who need a visa still complete MDAC as well.

Do visa-free travelers need MDAC?

Yes. Travelers from visa-free countries generally need to complete MDAC before arriving in Malaysia, unless they fall under an applicable exemption.

Do visa-required travelers also need MDAC?

Yes. An eVisa does not replace MDAC. Visa holders generally need to complete MDAC before arrival as well, unless they are exempt.

Does every nationality need MDAC?

MDAC is generally required for foreign visitors to Malaysia, regardless of whether they need a visa. Certain traveler categories, including Singaporean citizens, are exempt.

Can I apply for MDAC in advance?

Yes. You can submit your application request through our website ahead of your trip. We will handle the MDAC submission according to your arrival date.

When should I apply for MDAC?

You can apply through our website in advance of your travel date. We recommend providing accurate travel information so your application can be prepared accordingly.

When is the MDAC itself submitted?

The actual MDAC submission is completed within three days before your arrival in Malaysia, including your arrival date. Your application request to us can be made earlier.

Do children and family members need their own details?

Yes. Every traveler, including each child, is entered with their own passport and personal details. Have every passport ready before you begin.

Can a family or group apply together?

Yes. Our group-application option handles a family or travel party in one application with one combined payment, while each person's details are entered individually.

How many travelers can a group application include?

Up to 10 travelers. A larger party can be split across more than one group application.

What if travelers have different accommodation details?

Enter each traveler's own accommodation details. Shared trip details are only for travelers with identical itineraries.

Can I correct my personal or passport information?

Yes. If you make a mistake in your name, date of birth, passport number, or passport expiry date, you can email our support team to request a correction.

Can I change my arrival date or hotel address?

Yes. You can email our support team to request changes to your arrival date, hotel address, or other travel details at least 72 hours before arrival, provided your MDAC has not yet been completed.

Once your MDAC is ready, arrival dates, accommodation details, and other travel information cannot be changed. You will need to submit a new application.

Does MDAC apply to air, land and sea arrivals?

Yes. MDAC applies whether you arrive by air, land or sea. Prepare the matching details: flight and airport for air, border crossing and transport for land, vessel and port for sea.

Do I need to complete MDAC again for a repeat trip?

Yes. MDAC relates to one specific journey, so each new trip needs its own submission with the current arrival date, transport and accommodation.

Does MDAC guarantee entry into Malaysia?

No. Our service covers the MDAC application. Entry into Malaysia remains subject to immigration requirements.
