Malaysia eVisa for Ethiopian Citizens

A practical walk-through for Ethiopian passport holders preparing a Malaysia eVisa application: matching your trip to a category, getting documents right, understanding the fees and knowing what happens once you submit. General guidance, not a ruling on your case.

Quick Answers for Ethiopian Applicants

Which visas can I apply for here?
The Tourist eVisa and the Business eVisa, each as Single Entry or, where available, Multiple Entry, at a Regular or Express service level.
Where does the application happen?
Online. You enter your details, add your documents, then review and submit.
What does it cost?
Service fees are shown in the fee section below, per applicant, in US dollars.
Who makes the decision?
Immigration, independently, after your application has been submitted. We assist with preparation and submission only.
Does Ethiopia's place on the homepage list settle anything?
No. Ethiopia is one of the nationalities with eVisa information on this website. That is a reason to read on, not a sign that any application will be approved.

Facts that would be specific to Ethiopian travelers, such as visa validity, the permitted length of stay, entry conditions or exemptions, are left out of this page on purpose. They have not been confirmed for this website, and Immigration is the authority on them.

Match Your Trip to the Right Category

A holiday or sightseeing
Tourist eVisa.
Seeing family or friends in Malaysia
Tourist eVisa, with documents from your host.
A stopover with no hotel stay
The Tourist eVisa guidance covers what to prepare when no hotel is planned, namely a short signed explanation letter.
Meetings, discussions or events
Business eVisa, with an invitation and company details.
Working, studying, joining a pass holder, or an approved official visit
One of the Visa with Reference (VDR) entry-visa categories rather than the Tourist or Business eVisa.

Single Entry or Multiple Entry

Single Entry fits one trip into Malaysia. Multiple Entry may allow more than one entry during its validity, but only where it is available and approved, and it depends on nationality-specific eligibility and immigration conditions. Nothing on this page can tell you whether it will be offered to an Ethiopian applicant, so plan on the basis that Single Entry may be the only option.

Document Readiness

Identity: needed for every application

  • A valid passport, the one you will carry on arrival.
  • A colour image of the biodata page that shows the whole page, including every edge and the machine-readable lines, with no glare or blur.
  • A recent portrait in passport style: plain backdrop, natural look, no filters or heavy editing.

The application shows upload instructions for the photograph; this page does not publish dimensions.

Travel: may be requested for a Tourist eVisa

  • A confirmed flight booking or issued e-ticket with your name, dates and booking reference.
  • A hotel reservation that names the guest and shows the address and stay dates, or your host's documents.
  • A recent bank statement or comparable proof of funds, if one is required.
  • A valid residence permit, where it applies to you.

Business: may be requested for a Business eVisa

  • A letter of invitation or support from the host organization in Malaysia.
  • Information on why you are going and what you will do.
  • Business registration or organizational information about your company, where applicable.
  • An employer's letter or business ID that shows your professional role.
Photographing the passport page
Lay the passport flat in even light and capture the full page, so no corner is cut off and the printed lines at the bottom stay readable.
More than one passport
If you hold more than one passport, use the one you will present on arrival, and enter its details.
If you live abroad
Add evidence of a valid residence permit or long-term stay authorization there, and proof that you plan to return after Malaysia.
Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate (If Applicable)
A valid Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate may be required on arrival if you travel from countries with a risk of yellow fever transmission, or if you transit for more than 12 hours at an airport in an affected country. The requirement depends on travel history and route, not passport nationality alone. Check whether it applies to your journey and carry the certificate when required.
No Ethiopia-specific list
This website does not publish a separate document list for Ethiopian passport holders. Items requested inside the application come first.

Six Steps to a Submitted Application

  1. Identify your purpose

Decide whether this is a leisure visit or a business visit.

  2. Read the category guide

Skim the Tourist or Business requirements page so you know what is usually asked.

  3. Choose entry option and service level

Pick Single or Multiple Entry, and Regular or Express, using the fee section below.

  4. Photograph and gather documents

Capture the passport page cleanly and collect the travel or business papers that apply.

  5. Enter details and upload

Type your details as printed on the passport and attach the documents requested for your category.

  6. Compare once more, then submit

Check every field against your documents and bookings, and complete the submission.

Regular or Express: How to Decide

Choose Regular if
You are happy with our standard handling: your documents are checked, the application is prepared and submitted, with no priority.
Choose Express if
You want priority handling of your application within our own process, and you accept that this does not change how long Immigration takes or what it decides.

Neither level improves your chance of approval, and neither lets us name a decision date. If your trip is close, the safest assumption is that Immigration's assessment may take as long as it takes.

After You Submit: How Immigration Assesses

What Immigration does
Reviews the submitted application on its own terms, may ask for further material or verification, and reaches the final decision.
What we do
Pass on requests and updates that reach us through the application process. We cannot influence, override, speed up or change the decision.
What nobody can know in advance
When the decision will arrive, and what it will be. A pending application has been neither approved nor refused.

For that reason no processing time is given on this page, for Ethiopian applicants or for anyone else. Submission itself only shows that the application has been lodged in a form that can be assessed.

Why Applications Take Longer Than Expected

Not every application is held up, but when one is, the cause is usually one of the following. Most can be prevented before you submit.

If a scan is unreadable
Send a sharp copy of the whole page. Glare, shadows and cropped edges are the usual reasons for a repeat request.
If details disagree with the passport
Correct the entry to match the passport exactly, whether it is a name, a number, a date of birth or a nationality.
If dates do not line up
Align the dates across your application, flight booking and accommodation confirmation.
If papers are missing
Add the host's documents for a family stay, or the invitation and company details for a business visit.
If Immigration wants to look further
Reply promptly and accurately. A request is not a refusal, and it can come even when the application was complete.

Before You Fly

A short list for the days before departure

  • Check every detail on the decision against your passport.
  • Check that flight and accommodation details carry the same names and dates as your application.
  • Look at the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card page to see whether the arrival card applies to you.
  • Keep non-refundable bookings on hold until a decision has been issued.
  • Remember that entry permissions remain subject to applicable immigration requirements.

Ethiopia eVisa FAQs

Does being on the nationality list mean my application will be approved?

No. The list shows for which nationalities this website publishes eVisa information. Approval is decided case by case by Immigration after submission.

How should I photograph my passport page?

Capture the entire biodata page in even light, with every edge and the machine-readable lines at the bottom visible, and without glare, shadows or blur.

What if I have more than one passport?

Use the passport you will present on arrival, and enter that passport's details in the application.

Must my accommodation be booked before I apply?

A confirmed reservation is recommended because it makes the application clearer, but it is not mandatory for every application. If you will stay with a host, provide the host's documents instead.

I am only stopping over in Malaysia. What should I prepare?

If no hotel stay is planned, the Tourist eVisa guidance suggests a short signed letter with your name, passport number, arrival and onward flight details and a note that no hotel stay is planned, plus the onward booking where available.

Is Single Entry or Multiple Entry the better choice?

Single Entry suits one trip. Multiple Entry may allow several entries where it is available and approved, which depends on nationality-specific eligibility and immigration conditions, so it may not be open to you.

Does submitting my application mean a quick decision?

No. Submission only means the application has been lodged for assessment. When Immigration decides, and what it decides, is outside our control and cannot be known in advance.

I live outside Ethiopia. Does that change what I prepare?

Yes, a little. Add proof of a valid residence permit, residence visa or other long-term stay authorization for the country where you live, and make sure your travel evidence shows that you intend to return there after Malaysia.

Should I buy flights before the decision arrives?

It is wiser to avoid non-refundable travel commitments until a decision has been issued, since neither the timing nor the outcome of the assessment can be promised.

Is the arrival card part of this application?

The MDAC is separate from the eVisa. Its overview page explains who needs one, so it is worth reading before you travel.

Use this page to prepare, not to forecast. It is not legal or immigration advice, it does not predict any decision, and the documents requested can differ from one applicant to the next.
